eCig Recycling Concerns Grow As Sales Increase

ecig recycling is another advantage for the evapor industry, critics who think vaping is bad for the environment are oblivious

Ecig recycling concerns are on the rise. That’s because ecig sales are on the rise and that’s great, but what happens to all those ecig cartridges and ecig batteries after they have outlived their usefulness? This is a concern that is picking up steam, even as companies like Green Smoke provide ecig recycling options. There are others that have done the same, but overall we are looking at millions of products being sold and probably only a fraction of consumers that are taking this issue with the seriousness that is needed. In addition to being an awful waste of re-usable materials, not recycling means these potentially hazardous materials are going into landfills that contaminate our soil and water.

We don’t mean to frighten, and certainly there is a balance between business and corporate responsibility, but with people becoming more environmentally conscious, we wonder why this isn’t talked about more. When you toss out ecig cartridges they are headed somewhere, not to mention ecig batteries. Ever wonder where those things are going? If you aren’t using the Green Smoke ecig recycling program or one for brand of ecig you like to vape, then you are contributing to a growing problem. Some people have been paying attention, and that would be a group of researchers in England.

The findings weren’t pretty. As RecyclingPortal.eu reports, “the new research investigated the ‘oxidant or bleaching reactivity’ of disposable ENDS components. Oxidants, also known as free radicals, are chemicals which can lead to chemical and DNA damage, and are capable of causing harm to living organisms. Without proper disposal, both LIBs and cartomisers could release additional chemicals to the environment.”

Alright, that doesn’t sound very good, we can’t deny that. Although the article doesn’t list which brands were tested, this should still sound some alarm bells for those concerned about the environmental impact of ecigs.

eCig Recycling A Better Alternative For Environment Than Smoking

ecig recycling offers a much better environmental option than dealing with cigarette buttsMore technical details were also published, explaining that, “researchers used a chemical called DCFH (2′-7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and Electron Pulse Resonance to detect the presence of oxidants in ENDS cartomisers, LIBs and vapour.

They found a significant increase in DCFH fluorescence following exposure to disassembled cartomisers, indicating the presence of oxidants.” Again, not good. At least it sounds that way.

We can’t in good faith say that there aren’t flaws in this report, because the raw data wasn’t immediately available, but it should certainly make us think about the ecig cartridges that we may be putting into the ground.

Before you dismay too much, don’t forget how much good ecig sales are doing for the environment too. Think about all of those millions of cigarette butts that aren’t being thrown out, often on the floor, all over America. Given that cigarette butts account for a good deal of our litter, the switch to ecigarettes can be a monumental change. After all, ecig batteries don’t produce any butts and ecig cartridges can be disposed of properly so they are recycled. You truly are “going green” by picking up an ecigarette, whether it is a cigalike type from Green Smoke or a more powerful system from a brand like Apollo.

Overall we know that vaping is making a difference, but we also need to keep tabs on where it can cause some harm. Everything has its pros and its cons, and ecigarettes are no different. The positives clearly outweigh the negatives, and even the negative of possible pollution from ecig parts can be reduced greatly. All it takes is some thinking ahead by users and perhaps a bigger ecig recycling campaign from electronic cigarette companies that create these products that then turn into waste.

We would love to see more awareness coming to consumers by way of the companies they buy from, because that gateway is the easiest path in getting this information across. Concerns over ecig products reaching our landfills are valid, but they aren’t overwhelming. Lets keep this item in the news and make sure the word gets out to ever vaper from sea to shining sea: recycle your ecig products!
