Only one Presidential campaign has taken a position on vaping. That campaign is the Gary Johnson Libertarian ticket that has officially endorsed vaping. The word came from the Johnson-Weld campaign’s national director Jim Wallace. Wallace said “The vaping industry currently counts about nine million customers, producing about $4 billion a year in annual sales. With the excessive regulation recently introduced by the FDA, as many as 12,000 vaping businesses will be put out of business.”
To be frank, we fear that Wallace’s estimation may be rosy. Many industry sources suggest that there are 30,000 to 40,000 vape shops and hundreds of US e-cigarette brands that are at risk of closure with excessive regulation. The FDA ecig regulations are already strangling vape shops. For example, vape shops, and the entire industry, are not even allowed to describe their product to consumers. There van be no mention of vapor as a smoking alternative.
Vape shops cannot demonstrate or assemble product for customers because to do so would, according the the FDA, make the vape shop a ‘manufacturer. Shops cannot make coils for customers because, once again, that would be considered manufacturing. Testing e-liquids can no longer be done without collecting a fee. Basically, the few advantages that vape shops had over online sales have been erased.
The good news is that vaping now has an advocate in the Presidential race.
Gary Johnson Supports Vaping
Gary Johnson supports vaping! The Libertarian ticket does not believe in regulations that detract from entrepreneurialism. “As Governor Gary Johnson has said, the free market and entrepreneurial spirit should be encouraged, not destroyed,” Wallace affirmed. “Nowhere is this more obvious than the vaping industry.”
Does this mean that you should vote for the Libertarian ticket? Is vaping your promary voting issue. Obviously only you can make that decision. At the end of the day, the influence of Big Pharma and other special interests is not going anywhere. The fight for the right to be smoke free, the fight for vaping rights is going to be a battle. Regardless of the election, vaping will require grass roots activism to overcome oppressive regulation.
Look at the misinformation campaign of the anti-vaping message. It is working. Young people who consume news from multiple sources feel that vaping is less harmful than smoking. Poeple who consume news from traditional media have a bad view of vapor and the numbers are getting worse as time goes on. Despite the increasing body of science that shows the benefits of vaping, the message is not getting out there to everyone.
