UPDATE: The FDA has not approved electronic cigarettes as a smoking cessation device. E-cigs are for adult tobacco consumers.
The empty champagne bottles are in the trash and the confetti is long gone, all of which means new years resolution ideas are front and center. If you are a smoker, your list could very well look like this: “stop smoking new years 2014.” It may not end there, but there is a pretty good chance that kicking the habit is again at the top of your list, as it may have been for new years 2013.
The goal of getting off cigarettes is common throughout the year, but on New Years interest in smoking cessation actually doubles. You aren’t alone, and if you are looking to quit smoking with e-cigs, you’ll be happy to know that it is not just your hangover talking.
We don’t have to tell you why you’re looking to make a change. Cigarettes are stinky, expensive, and, in case you haven’t heard, not all that great for you. Still, the first drag on your favored brand of cigarettes feels incredibly frustrating. That alone can make you wonder how anyone can quit smoking with e-cigs, which from afar can look like yet another in a long line of less than capable tools. But new years resolution ideas are bound to look a little far-fetched at the beginning of the year. They look optimistic and hopeful of course, but there are always those doubts that creep in when you put those goals in front of youself. The differentiating elements of e-cigarettes are what could leave that “stop smoking new years 2014” goal with a check mark at the end of the year.
If you have done a little bit of research on the topic, you may be asking why everyone thinks they can quit smoking with e-cigs. There is mounting evidence through various studies that seem to point toward this being a great idea for many smokers looking to make that change. How can e-cigs help you where other ideas have failed you in the past? There are many answers to this one, but the first one I would point out is that electronic cigarettes can look and feel like actual tobacco cigarettes, and just that fact can make a big difference in the psychology of quitting smoking. We covered the psychological aspects of smoking, but if you have ever tried to quit cold turkey you know there is just something comforting to holding that cigarette in your hand – something you can’t get from a patch or nicotine gum. Being able to hold an e-cigarette in your hand and take puffs like you normally would is a big reason why many quit smoking with e-cigs.
Another reason e-cigs can help you where other aids have failed in the past is that important throat hit you get to experience from an electronic cigarette. While the patch and nicotine gum can fill that nicotine need, they don’t give you the instant satisfaction that e-cigarettes give you.
Our most highly rated electronic cigarettes all give you that familiar sensation of nicotine-filled smoke that hits the back of your throat and makes you feel like you just took a nice long drag off of a cigarette. That throat hit can be hugely important in giving you that well known feeling, and in turn making it much more likely that you will remain satisfied and not go looking for your old pack of smokes.
The last reason I want to mention here is going to seem a little odd – social pressure, the good kind. We all know smokers get plenty of pressure from their friends and family to change their lifestyle, so much so that it can get to be downright annoying. The great thing about trying to quit smoking with e-cigs is the amount of positive social pressure you seem to get. When people see you taking a puff they may look dismayed, until they get closer and realize it isn’t your regular stinky cigarette – it’s an electronic cigarette with no smell and no smoke. You can’t imagine the amount of “good for you” and “keep at it” comments I’ve gotten from friends and strangers alike. As opposed to quitting cold turkey or with other aids, electronic cigarettes are visible signs that you are trying to stick to your “stop smoking new years 2014” resolution. New years resolution ideas are common, but actually seeing someone take action visually really does create a sort of positive social pressure. It’s the kind that makes you feel good and can keep you looking at this effort of yours as a positive one that is showing results.
Electronic cigarettes are quickly becoming a fixture for smokers looking for an alternative to traditional cigarettes. For a lot of folks, replacing smoke with vapor has proven to be a lot easier than trying to ignore your desire to feel that warm smoke in your throat and lungs.
Social pressure can be huge (this guy even calculated specifically how huge) but with e-cigs you get it in a positive way. That’s the last of several reasons we went over here for how you can quit smoking with e-cigs like you haven’t been able to in the past. If you are looking for more answers, we have covered plenty of e-cig topics that may help you so we encourage you to browse around. As far as new years resolution ideas go, there may not be a better one for you than the goal to quit smoking with e-cigs this year. At ECCR we are in your corner, so feel free to check out our boards or live chat for additional support. Good luck with all your resolutions this year!
Have a great 2014!
