Vaping is under attack. You know and we know it. There is no way to deny these facts, nor would we even want to try. In our years of reporting on the electronic cigarette industry, things have never looked so bleak for the ecig industry and your right to vape. We remember when it was difficult to import any type of ecig at all. We remember when we were looked at as weirdos because we were exhaling vapor instead of smoke. For putting pen-like contraptions to our lips and breathing in something all together different.
Those were tough times, that’s true. But they were also times of pioneering spirit. They were the beginning of grassroots efforts by vapors and ecig brands alike to inform smokers that they have a choice. That there is more out there for them than traditional tobacco cigarettes. That the differences between vaping ecigs and smoking are indeed huge. It took a lot of fighting and bucking the system, but we did break through. We broke through faster than we even imagined we would, and generation of vaping was born.
It wasn’t just born, it exploded onto the scene, and with good reason. Smokers quickly understood the value of ecigs and making the switch to vaping with ecigarettes. It spread across our great nation and gave a real opportunity for people to make that change in their lives. That change they had been waiting years if not decades to make. The change they had tried to make on their own many times, but tobacco cigarettes always clawed their way back into their lives. Now even celebrities were vaping, even at events like the SAG awards. The media went nuts when Leonardo DiCaprio showed off his vapor in defiance of the critics.
The word vape was even named as the Oxford Dictionaries word of the year at one point. Through all the troubles, electronic cigarettes had broken through and had been embraced by the public. Vaping had arrived.
Vaping Will Be Fought For, Again
But the good days of ecigs and vaping are now in danger. There is now way around it. Even in the early days when we fought to get products important, things never seemed this grim.
With the FDA’s new finalized regulation set to take effect in a few short months, we are being threatened. Our way of life is being threatened because of a lot of misinformation and poor legislation. It’s being threatened by a lot of lies that are working.
Call me naïve, call me what you will, but I don’t think this is anywhere near being over. Vaping has taken a hold of too many people and saved too many lives to simple end in a whimper. No, this is not how things are destined to go for electronic cigarettes. There are more people to reach and a huge community of existing vapers that will simply not go back to the ways of old, to the dangerous ways of smoking.
So I say now to vaping as Dylan Thomas said in his famous poem:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
That’s what we need to do, together. Now is the time to fight and rage against the dying of the light, so to speak. We’ve come this far and there is no way we are going back. Conjure up all your pep-talk speeches if you like. Whether it’s Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday or John Belushi in Animal House, get yourself psyched up. Vaping is worth fighting for, and now is the time we must do it.
We must not despair, because the world needs vaping. Smokers need vaping. We need vaping. We must fight for it in any way we can. Things look bleaker now than we thought they would be, but as the saying goes, it’s always darkest before the dawn. There is still time to make a difference. This is what we have to do. Vaping must not go gentle into that good night, because the world would be a poorer place without it. And a smokey one at that.
