The CDC has released new data that shows that about half of all smokers have tried an ecig. There is still a lot of misunderstanding about what ecigs are. With that in mind, we wanted to go back to the basics today and answer the question, what is e-juice? Eliquids and e-juice is a diverse category in vaping and we will do our best to help you make sense of it all.
As we begin talking about what is e-juice, we will start off by saying that e-juice is the liquid that is converted to vapor by an electronic cigarette device. Now we will touch on a variety of names used for e-juice. It is often called e-liquid, sometimes with a hyphen sometimes eliquid without the hyphen. It has been called ecig liquid, nicotine liquid, nicotine juice, nic juice, or sometimes just juice.
E-juice has a lot of names but every one of those names refers to the liquid that is converted into vapor by an electronic cigarette device. The electronic cigarette device’ atomizer comes in contact with the eliquid and heats the eliquid until it becomes a vapor. You then inhale the vapor and exhale just as you would cigarette smoke.
A battery is activated and a small charge is sent to the atomizer to generate heat. The atomizer coil heats up to a temperature sufficient to cause vaporization of the eliquid. Good quality electronic cigarette devices do not overheat the coil or the e-liquid and as a result the vapor that is produced is free of toxins. In fact, Public Health England has found unequivocally that vaping, using an ecig, is 95% safer than smoking.
The viscosity, thickness, of the e-liquid will vary from product to product. The flavor of ingredients along with the quality of your ecig device all play a role in how much vapor is produced. When people are just starting out, they often prefer a think eliquid that has a strong ‘throat hit’. Throat hit refers to the sensation that you feel when inhaling something. Once people have been vaping for a while, they often want more vapor. In those cases they will choose a thicker e-liquid capable of creating larger vapor clouds.
Vaping e-juice may look like smoking but there is no burning or combustion. That is the secret to the success of electronic cigarettes. It mimics smoking in every way. While some people say that electronic cigarettes don’t help people quit, official CDC electronic cigarette data says otherwise. The CDC found that almost 56% of people that have quit smoking have done so with ecigs. A lot of that has to do with just how well eliquid enables smokers to mimic the act of smoking a cigarette but while reducing the risk.
What Is E-Juice Made Of?
This is really the big question that most people have. They want to know what is e-juice and what is e-juice made of. There is no single answer because eliquid recipes vary greatly from brand to brand.
To put it in a nutshell, e-juice is made up of flavor, nicotine and a blend of water, propylene glycol, and or vegetable glycerin.
This is all that you will find in e-liquid. Now, they are not all alike and there is a huge disparity in quality.
I am not going to pull any punches just because I am a vaping advocate. I am obligated to tell you the truth and tell you that a lot of ejuices that are being sold out there today are bad for you. A recent study of random e-liquid products purchased in the United States and the UK found that 74% of e-juice contained diacetyl or diacetyl derivatives.
Diacetyl is a flavoring substitute that is safe for human consumption but not safe for inhalation. Exposure to inhaled diacetyl has been linked to a condition known as popcorn lung or bronchiolitis obliterans. Diacetyl is a butter flavoring and a lot of the people who are blending eliquids today do not even know they are putting this stuff in their products.
Much of the e-liquid being made today is being blended in the back rooms of vape shops or by guys with a make shift ejuice lab set up in their garage. Put bluntly, they may have great intention but they just do not know what they are doing. They buy random flavorings and other ingredients online and make ejuice. It’s not a good situation.
If you take one thing away from this entire article, please please hear this. You need to make sure that you are buying your e-liquid from a professional, reputable vendor that makes e-juice in a state of the art lab with a clean room and professional chemists. Stick with only the best e-juice vendors, please. Companies like VaporFi and Halo have FDA approved labs, endless flavors, impeccable quality and the list goes on. Stick to the best e-liquids.
The best eliquids are a world apart from the low quality brands out there. Just as an example, take a look at VaporFi. They publish independent lab reports of their eliquids. They use only the best ingredients. Apollo eCigs has built their own eliquid that that surpasses food industry standards. Halo Cigs Premium eLiquid was the pioneer in turning blending e-juice into a refined science.
When you are buying e-liquid, you will often have a choice when it comes to choosing the vegetable glycerin, VG, and propylene glycol, PG, ratio. When you ask what is e-juice well your ejuice will have one of both of these ingredients included. What are they? Let’s find out.
Propylene Glycol Or PG
Propylene glycol is an organic liquid with no odor and a slightly sweet taste.PG is a substance that has been with us for more than a century and we do know a lot about it.
Propylene glycol has been successfully used as a food, medication, cosmetics additive for a long time. Asthma inhalers use propylene glycol.
PG is recognized as safe. Go look at your tube of tooth paste right now. You will probably see propylene glycol in the ingredients.
It is safe? Yes, it is recognized as safe and human beings have been exposed to PG for 100 years with no adverse effects on human health. For decades propylene glycol has been used in stage shows and movies to create movie smoke or fog. People have been inhaling PG for decades.
The bottom line is the propylene glycol may have a scary sounding scientific name but it is really a benign substance. It is part of a large family of substances that we know as alcohols. Don’t worry, it is not the type of alcohol that gets you drunk! PG can occur naturally or be made synthetically.
The FDA has approved propylene glycol as a food additive, a medication additive, cosmetics additive and so on.
Propylene Glycol is viscous but thinner than vegetable glycerin. PG is the base of most eliquids that are used in cigalikes, that is the electronic cigarettes that look like tobacco cigarettes. Some people find PG to be harsh and can experience throat irritation or other vaping side effects. This happens in a certain segment of people and if you experience this it would be a good idea to switch to a VG e-liquid or a 50 / 50 VG / PG ratio.
If you are looking for a cigalike with a VG eliquid, you should perhaps try Halo Cigs with blank G6 cartridges. You can manually fill the cartridges with Halo V-Juice, a VG based e-liquid.
Generally, a 50 / 50 ration is a nice range for most vapors. With a 50/50 VG/PG ratio, you get an excellent blend of flavor, throat hit and vapor. There is another type of vaping called subohm vaping. Subohm vaping involves using an atomizer with a resistance of less than 1 ohm. This can be tricky but it does produce huge vapor clouds. For subohm vaping, you need a higher VG ejuice.
Vegetable Glycerin Or VG
Look For Comapnies That Use USP Grade VG
Vegetable glycerin is a carbohydrate and a popular food additive that is considered GRAS by the FDA. GRAS stands for generally recognized as safe. GRAS is the standard that is recognized by all regulatory bodies. Vegetable glycerin is a very common food additive that is also used in medications and cosmetics. VG is a thicker liquid than PG. The throat hit is not as strong as what you get from PG but you do get more vapor. PG is the eliquid of choice for subohm vapers. Typically, a high VG eliquid will still have a small percentage of PG because propylene glycol is better for flavoring.
That’s where VG plays in to answering the question – what is e-juice. But VG is used in a lot more than ejuice. Remember that I said it was a food additive, well you find it in a huge percentage of baked goods because it holds moisture well. You will find VG in beauty products, pet foods and hand creams of all shapes and sizes.
You have already consumed VG at some point in your life and you probably even used it at some point today. It is an everyday common substance that is already a part of our daily lives. Thanks to ecigarette technology, now VG can be used to create a less harmful option for smokers.
VG PG Ratio
The VG PG ratio of eliquid plays a role in how much vapor you get and the flavor sensations. A 50 / 50 ratio is a beautiful middle ground that provides a nice throat hit, great flavor and lots of vapor. You cannot say one ratio is better than another and it really all comes down to personal preference.
Most of the high quality eliquid companies let you choose your own VG PG ratio. Once again it is critical that you buy from a reputable vendor such as those companies that we talk about here on ECCR. You want pharmaceutical grade VG and PG. It is important to buy professionally blended products that use only quality ingredients.
For subohm vaping, you will need a higher VG eliquid. For subohm vaping it is recommended that you use a VG PG ratio of at least 70 30. The subohm device will create so much vapor that the milder throat hit of VG will be compensated for by the sheer amount of vapor. Many people prefer a max VG eliquid, which is an ejuice that is almost all VG.
Choosing Nicotine Amount
The Best Vape Brands Offer Multiple Nicotine Levels
Choosing the right nicotine level is essential if you are going to have success switching from smoking to vaping. The amount of nicotine in your eliquid will essentially be replacing the amount of nicotine that you are used to ingesting when you smoke cigarettes.
If you are a pack per day smoker who walks into a gas station and buys a Mark Ten ecigarette, you are probably not going to be happy. Mark Ten has a 15mg nicotine level and that may not be enough to satisfy a pack per day smoker.
Don’t buy the ecigs from gas stations. Buy from the best electronic cigarette companies and just avoid the disappointment of inferior retail products. You will always get the best products and best prices when you buy direct online. The best companies offer a full range of nicotine levels and flavors to suit you specifically.
Here’s what you should do. If you are a pack per day smoker, start with an 18 mg eliquid. That should do it. If you do find that your nicotine withdrawal or cravings are not managed, try a 24 mg eliquid level. Start low and then go higher if you must. If you are a 2 pack smoker then you will need at least a 24 mg eliquid.
People who smoke a half pack per day will probably be satisfied at the 10 to 16 mg nicotine level. Casual smokers should go with a 6 mg nicotine level. Choosing the right nicotine level will play a big part in being able to make the switch and leave tobacco in the ditch. That rhymed!
If you are going to be subohm vaping, you do not want a high nicotine content. A level of 3 mg or 6 mg should suffice. Even if you are a heavy cigarette smoker the amount of vapor produced by subohm vaping is substantial to say the least! Even with a lower nicotine content, you will be absorbing a lot simply because of the volume.
Choosing the right nicotine level all related back to a basic proposition. That is the question of how much nicotine is in a cigarette. The answer to that question is that you absorb about 1 mg of nicotine with every cigarette you smoke. Light, regular, ultra-light it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day you absorb about 1 gram of that nicotine into your bloodstream.
So a pack per day smoker is taking in about 20 mg of nicotine per day. You do not absorb nicotine as easily when vaping. Tobacco additives actually accelerate nicotine absorption and the particulates of smoke are so small and invasive that the move faster through your system. This is actually bad. Vaping particulates are less invasive, which is a part of what makes vaping safer.
When you are looking to replace that amount of nicotine, you can understand why nicotine level is so important. If you vape 2 ml of 18 mg eliquid in the course of a day, you should be able to absorb enough of that nicotine to come close enough to replacing the nicotine from smoking.
What Is E-Juice?
Halo Is An Example Of A Leading eLiquid Company
I think we have covered most of the facets of answering ‘what is e-juice?’ Ultimately, what is e-juice is simply the liquid that is converted into vapor by an electronic cigarette device. It is made up of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, flavor, and water.
There are many types of eliquids and one question that you should be asking is where should I buy eliquid. The answer is that you should by from the best companies and buy direct online. You are going to get the best quality, by far, and the best price.
Some of the eliquid brands that we recommend are VaporFi, Halo eCigs, Apollo Cigs eliquid, Black Note natural eliquid and Mt Baker Vapor. All of these companies have professionals on staff and utilize state of the art lab procedures to blend their eliquid recipes. These ejuice companies use the best ingredients and all of the blends are 100% diacetyl free.
Full disclosure, yes we do work with these companies. But we work with them because they are the best. That is the only reason that we mention them here. What I really want to do is to guide you away from low quality eliquids because frankly they are not safe. This is one of our main concerns as an industry. Too many eliquids are being blended and sold by people who are simply not qualified to do so.
So we know the answer to what is e-juice and from that point you need to focus on quality. Vaping is changing lives every day. Millions of Americans now vape instead of smoke. Finding that success depends on making the right buying choices. If you have any questions or if you need help picking an ejuice or ecig, never hesitate to contact us. We are here to help.
