Smokers cough is a persistent cough that is experienced by long-term smokers. People who haven’t been smoking for long may experience a form of smoker’s cough but it will be more of an occasional, dry cough. It is longer term smoker’s that experience the discomfort and even pain of persistent coughing due to their tobacco habit.

The cough is usually at its worst in the morning after waking and calms down as the day goes on. It is certainly annoying and it can also often be painful. If you suffer from smokers cough, you know that it can negatively impact your life. If you have a loved one who smokes and you hear them cough all the time it can be stressful and deeply concerning. No one likes to suffer not do we like to see our loved ones suffer.

Coughing can be traced to a number of sources and if you are a smokers you should not ignore the symptoms. If you have the classic hallmarks of smoker’s cough then you are not alone. We will talk about a few things that you can do the might help. Quitting smoking is obviously the best thing that you can do! Beyond that there are a few things that may help relieve symptoms.

All persistent coughs should be monitored. Searching for ideas or remedies on the internet may be one thing, but you should never self-diagnose based on something that you Googled. If you have any concerns about a cough you should talk to your doctor without hesitation.

Smokers Cough Symptoms

Smokers cough tells us that all is not well. Things could be better and something has to change. Smokers cough does not go away by itself. No cough medicine can touch it. It is not like a cough from a cold or flu infection.

Smokers cough is persistent but is most obvious when waking up in the morning.

Coughing occurs because your body is trying to get rid of something that you don’t need and you don’t want. Smoking cigarettes produces a lot of what you don’t need and what you don’t want. If you smoke enough and long enough, smokers cough is probably going to be in your future.

Persistent smoker’s cough is a wet cough, it often produces mucus. The mucus may be clear, yellow, white or greenish in color. The cough may also be a sign of chronic bronchitis. Smokers are at far greater risk of respiratory illness than non-smokers.

What Causes Smokers Cough?

smokers cough can be painful and uncomfortableSmokers cough is the result of your body’s effort to expel the toxins that you have inhaled when smoking. When smoke goes into your lungs, coughing is supposed to happen! Why can you smoke and not cough most of the time? Frankly because your lungs are NOT doing what they should be.

When someone is first exposed to tobacco smoke, the lungs reject it immediately. Remember your first drag on a cigarette? You coughed, your eyes watered and you thought it was terrible! Then, after another drag or two, the cough went away.

If only you could go back in time to that moment and never have started to begin with. Your body was telling you something then and if you suffer from smokers cough, it still trying to get the message through to you now.

What causes smokers cough is easy, your lungs trying to get rid of the garbage you inhaled in tobacco smoke. Tobacco smoke is toxic, its as simple as that. There is no safe form of tobacco smoke. Cigarettes are bad and hookah is worse.

When your lungs don’t like something that you have inhaled, their immediate response is to get it out! The cilia in your lungs are like a filters and brooms all in one. They detect toxins and unwanted elements and work to reject them quickly. They collect the toxins and redirect them to the exit via a cough. They are like the bouncer of your lungs. The cilia are always sweeping back and forth, looking for your body’s enemies.

It is not the amount of nicotine in a cigarette that causes coughing. It is not the nicotine at all. It is the thousands of toxins like the ammonia and tar just to name two. The chemical makeup of cigarette smoke is not a pretty picture.

After smoking a few cigarettes the cilia in your lungs basically quit working. That’s why you are able to smoke cigarettes without coughing. And that is also why when you wake up with smokers cough, having a cigarette actually causes the cough to subside. You are basically knocking your cilia into submission.

When your cilia aren’t working, all of the toxins in the smoke begin to accumulate in the lungs. Smoke particulates are very small, smaller than vapor particulates, so the intrude everywhere in the lungs.

When you sleep at night, your body automatically goes into detox mode. That includes your lungs. Smokers cough very often occurs after you go for a period of time without a cigarette, such as overnight. During that time, your cilia essentially begin to recover and start doing their job again.

Once your cilia swing back into action, they realize “hey, there’s a bunch of crap here in the lungs and we got to get it out. As soon as our body wakes up let’s get to work and cough this stuff outta here!” The cilia, irritated by the toxins, then cause you to cough, which causes you to be irritated.

That’s why smokers cough so often happens in the morning. You weren’t smoking while you were sleeping and your cilia actually partially healed themselves over night and are going back to work. So you cough a little, have a cigarette and it seems to die down. That’s because you are polluting the cilia to such an extent that they quit working.

Smokers Cough Remedy

advantages of quitting smoking with electronic cigarettesThe body is amazing. It wants to heal itself and as soon as the cilia in your lungs have a chance, they begin to recover. Even when you go to sleep they take full advantage of the time away from cigarette smoke to begin to heal and function again.

They literally begin healing overnight. You need to take a look at our quitting smoking timeline. Smoking continues the cycle.

This cycle will continue until you quit smoking. There are 7000 chemicals in cigarette smoke many of them are absolutely vicious toxins.

Sounds depressing, huh? Really, it’s not. Now that you know the answer to “what is smokers cough”, you should actually be encouraged. Having smoker’s cough indicates you body’s ability to heal itself from the damage that has been done by smoking.

Some of the damage may be permanent, we can’t sugar coat that. Still, you can recover from a lot of the damage. The longer you go without smoking, the more recovery you will enjoy. That pesky smoker cough is your body telling it wants to get better and it can get better.

The best smokers cough remedy is quitting tobacco cigarettes. Quit any way that you can. Patches, gums, nicotine inhalers, whatever. Take a look at some of the quit smoking resources available.

Using ecigs as an alternative to smoking is an option that is available to you. Don’t buy into the anti-ecig propaganda either. Ecig vapor may not be perfect, but it does not contain the remotest fraction of of what you find in tobacco smoke. Ecigs, used properly, do not produce any measurable carcinogens.

Quitting smoking is the ideal outcome and the goal that you have to strive for. Easier said than done, I know, but that has to be the ultimate objective.

Smokers Cough Treatment

honey and fluids can help ease smokers coughIn the meantime, there are things you can do to alleviate the nagging symptoms of smoker’s cough. The cough can be annoying and even painful. A cough is a violent action involving a massive contraction of muscles and the body’s tense response. There is no denying the discomfort and even pain.

Whenever air is expelled in massive quantities there is friction. Think about it. Have you ever noticed that after exercising for the first time in a long time your lungs literally feel like the are burning. Air does cause friction and when it occurs in the body the sensitive tissues of the throat and lungs are susceptible.

The causes of the cough that occur deeper in the lung tissue can only be addressed by addressing the toxins that you are outting in there. The only remedy for that is to, well, stop putting those toxins in there and get them out once and for all.

A fair amount of the pain and discomfort caused by the smokers cough is due to the sensitivities of an irritated throat and upper respiratory tract. These irritations themselves lead to more coughing. Fortunately, you can do something about this aspect of smokers cough.

Smokers cough remedy tips:

  • Make sure you drink enough water! This one is easy and hard at the same time. Doctors and other experts are always telling us to drink more water to manage all kinds of conditions. They tell us it will help with allergies, help us lose weight and more. It is true that we tend to be a dehydrated society. The drinks that we love so much, coffees and sodas, actually dehydrate us. We could probably all use more water on a day to day basis. It also turns out and drinking 6 to 9 glasses of water per day can help relieve some of the irritation of smokers cough. Water moistens sensitive tissues making less susceptible to friction damage and it actually thins out the mucus in your lungs and throat.
  • .
  • Gargle saltwater, especially at night. Sometimes the simplest things have the most impact. salt and water, to a natures medicinal miracles, can help relieve and heal inflamed tissues.
  • .
  • Tea with honey. This gem has been around for centuries because it works. Honey has remarkable soothing properties. Its anti-inflammatory properties are beginning to catch the eye of experts who seem to just now be catching on to what are grandparents learned from their grandparents. Tea is also hydrating. By the way, honey is also a sweet treat. Everybody likes honey!
  • .
  •  Throat lozenges can also give you some relief. They add immediate soothing sensations to inflamed areas. Vitamin enriched lozenges can also boost immunity. Smokers, you need all the immune boost that they can get. Your lung inflammation provides a very tempting pathway for any virus and bacteria looking for a place to hang their hats.
  • .
  • How about some eucalyptus vapor in your room while you are sleeping. Or steam. Eucalyptus can naturally help you breathe better. Smokers cough hits you hardest when you wake up. Maybe you can prevent the worst of it by having eucalyptus vapors actually having a preventative effect.
  • .
  • Try and sleep with your head slightly elevated.
  • .
  • Diet and exercise can also help alleviate the worst symptoms of smokers cough. Diet and exercise help with pretty much everything so get moving!

The big thing to keep in mind here is that you are the proud owner of a miraculous machine that is just itching to improve and do its job as designed. Your body wants to get better, it wants to heal. You just have to help it along a little.

It is estimated that between 3 and 4 million people have quit smoking with ecigs. They now vape instead of smoke. Vapers are able to control their nicotine intake and can reduce it in a slow and steady fashion. It may be an option for you.

If you have tried using an ecig and it did not do the trick, perhaps it was not the right ecig for you. Vapor cigarettes vary. Some are fine Cadillacs that will never let you down while others are 74 Pintos that overheat and should not even be allowed on the road. Unfortunately, the Pintos are more accessible as they are the ones with the highest profit margins so, naturally, they are the ones that make their way onto the shelves of your favorite local stores.

The quality ecigarettes out there with the proper nicotine level are the best choice by far. Take a look at the leading ecigarettes companies as chosen by real customers who have found something that works for them.

All the best in your quest to kick the habit and be rid of that pesky smokers cough once and for all!
